Abstract

Arteriosclerosis is the result of a progressive, but not continuous degeneration of the blood vessel wall mesenchyme. The ground substance hypothesis is one of the oldest pathogenic theories of arteriosclerosis (Virchow, 1856). More recent studies have shown that the ground substance of the mesenchyme has an important physiology and is a biologically active compound. Alterations of the mesenchymal ground substance have been shown to be related to the development of arteriosclerosis (Hauss, 1973). Deficiency of essential fatty acids has been demonstrated to result in defective structure of mesenchymal ground substance (Sinclair, 1958). In an attempt to study the sclerogenic effect of a primary mesenchymal lesion, fat-free diet was given to albino rats and the arterial lesions were examined by light and electron microscopy.
