Abstract

Increased serum (s-) cholesterol (Chol) concentration is associated with atherosclerotic diseases (Keys, 1975) and thus considered as a risk factor for development of premature ischaemic heart disease (IHD). Also increased s-triglyceride (TG) concentration has been shown to be a risk factor for IHD (Carlson and Böttiger, 1972). Increased s-Chol and/or s-TG means the presence of hyperlipoproteinemia (HLP). Several studies during the latest ten years consequently have also indicated that increased concentrations of serum very low density lipoproteins (VLDL) and/or of serum low density lipoproteins (LDL) might be risk factors for IHD. Increased concentration of high density lipoproteins (HDL), however, has been suggested to be beneficial and might prevent the development of IHD (Glueck et al., 1976).
