Zusammenfassung
Das Phänomen der Pyroelektrizität (pyr, griech.: Feuer) ist bereits aus der Antike bekannt, wo berichtet wird, daß ein bestimmter Stein (wahrscheinlich Turmalin) beim Erwärmen kleine Staubkörner anzieht [1]. Systematische Untersuchungen dieses Effektes begannen im achtzehnten Jahrhundert, als gezeigt werden konnte, daß es sich um ein elektrisches Phänomen handelt, d.h. daß beim Erwärmen von Turmalin Ladungen an der Oberfläche des Kristalls freigesetzt werden, und beim Abkühlen die gleiche Ladungsmenge mit umgekehrtem Vorzeichen entsteht. Dies kann zurückgeführt werden auf ein permanentes elektrisches Dipolmoment des Kristalls, das aber im Gleichgewichtszustand durch freie Ladungsträger kompensiert wird. Wird jedoch die Temperatur des Kristalls verändert, dann verändert sich infolgedessen auch das Dipolmoment und somit ist die Ladungskompensation nicht mehr vollständig, bis wieder genügend freie Ladungsträger zu- b.z.w. abgeflossen sind (s.
