Zusammenfassung
In ihren Anfängen (Ende der 50er bis Ende der 60er Jahre) beschäftigte sich die Künstliche Intelligenz (KI) überwiegend mit domänenunabhängigen Verfahren zur Lösung von Problemen (unter den Begriff Problemlösungsverfahren fassen wir im folgenden auch Erkennungs- und Verstehensprozesse). Mit Domänenunabhängigkeit (oder Diskursbereichsunabhängigkeit) meinen wir dabei, daß ein Verfahren nicht für einen spezifischen Anwendungsfall zugeschnitten ist. Somit werden über die Vorgabe der für eine zu lösende Aufgabe relevanten Objekte und Operatoren hinaus keine Annahmen über eine spezielle Anwendungsdomäne gemacht. Trotz beachtlicher Anfangserfolge1 kam es bald zu einer gewissen Stagnation: Komplexere Aufgabenstellungen waren mit den bis dahin entwickelten Ansätzen nicht zu lösen. Man erkannte schließlich, daß es unrealistisch ist, die Domänenunabhängigkeit für Systeme zur Lösung komplexerer Probleme aufrechtzuerhalten, da die zu betrachtenden Suchräume viel zu groß sind, um mit allgemeinen und wenig zielgerichteten Verfahren in akzeptabler Zeit (oder überhaupt) abarbeitbar zu sein. So umfaßt der Suchraum des Damespiels, das eine noch vergleichsweise einfache Problemklasse darstellt, schon etwa 1040 Zustände (nach (Samuel 63)). Die Größe eines Suchraums läßt sich nur durch Bereitstellung domänenspezifischen, also für eine spezielle Anwendung relevanten Wissens verkleinern. Dadurch können bestimmte Pfade im ursprünglichen Suchraum als irrelevant erkannt und ausgeschlossen werden.
