Abstract

Concrete, by far the most utilised material in modern construction design, varies considerably in quality, depending mainly on its basic ingredients. These are normally cement, aggregates and water, which must all be carefully selected, accurately proportioned and thoroughly mixed, in order to produce a workable green concrete giving the required strength and density when hardened. The results from practice and research have enabled a high standard to be attained in this procedure nowadays. As opposed to timber and steel, for example, the properties of concrete can be largely determined by the site engineers themselves, who are able to exercise much control in its use.
