Reliability Based Factor of Safety for Unmanned Spacecrafts

Abstract

A method is presented for the definition of Factor of Safety ensuring structural reliability. The proposed procedure encompasses both theoretical reliability and practical aspects, combining design requirements, qualification and acceptance tests. Design criteria in terms of reliability have been defined based on previous spacecraft projects and then translated into structure design requirements that can be met in a practical design process: this was performed using a rational approach in terms of statistical variation coefficient of both strength and loads. As a consequence, a set of Factor of Safety (FOS) is proposed which is valid for unmanned spacecrafts up to 2000 kg. The methodology can easily be extended to larger masses; work is in progress for manned spacecraft aspects and computer implementation.
