Zusammenfassung
Unter Korrosion versteht man den Vorgang, bei dem ein Metall chemisch mit seiner Umgebung reagiert. Es führt zur Beseitigung des Metalls und manchmal zur Bildung fester Korrosionsprodukte. Zu den schädigenden Wirkungen gehören: (I) gleichmäßiger Verlust an Metall und dementsprechend an Festigkeit, (II) örtlicher Verlust an Metall, der zu Lochbildung oder zu einem Abbau an Festigkeit führt, der in keinem Verhältnis zur beseitigten Metallmenge steht, (III) Verringerung der Maßhaltigkeit und der Oberflächeneigenschaften, (IV) Bildung eines hinderlichen Korrosionsproduktes, (V) Freigabe von Aktivität in die Umgebung, wenn das Metall selber radioaktiv war.
