Zusammenfassung

Die sprachliche Variation umfaßt mehrere Dimensionen. Die traditionelle Dialektforschung befaßte sich mit der rein räumlichen Variation, später mit Sprachgeographie und erst seit neuestem mit regionalen Sprachunterschieden. Das neue Gebiet der Sprachsoziologie hat den Blick auf die Variationen der Sprache in sozialstruktureller Hinsicht auch auf die Dynamik des Wechsels von einer Sprache zu einer anderen gelenkt. Schließlich behandelte die historische Sprachwissenschaft Veränderungen als Funktion der Zeit, wobei es sich gewöhnlich um beträchtliche Zeiträume handelte. Bis heute wurde kein Versuch gemacht, Veränderungen der Sprache in einem durch die genannten Aspekte definierten viel-dimensionalen Raum zu behandeln. Es ist jedoch offensichtlich, daß geographische, soziologische und geschichtliche Sprachphänomene eng verwandt und niemals nur geographisch oder nur geschichtlich sind.

Einige der Gedanken dieses Beitrages wurden bereits in einem Referat errötert, das unter dem Titel: „Wenn sich Sprachen begegnen ...“ auf dem Phonology Festival der Universität von Hawaii am 15. Januar 1970 gehalten wurde. Ich habe sehr viel von Diskussionen mit Burkhard Ortmann profitiert, der jetzt der geographischen Fakultät der McGill-Universität angehört.
