Abstract
String theory1 is an approach to describe the constituents of all matter and their interactions, at the most fundamental and deepest level. It is thus an extension of elementary particle physics, and in fact most likely the only possible extension that is consistent with both quantum mechanics and general relativity. To get a quick idea about the relevant distance scales we will talk about, see Fig. 1.
