Zusammenfassung

In der Todesursachenstatistik der industrialisierten Länder stehen die zerebrovaskulären Erkrankungen nach den Herz-Kreislauf-Erkrankungen und dem Krebs an dritthäufigster Stelle. So verstarben allein in Nordrhein-Westfalen im Jahre 1991 mehr als 20 000 Personen an Krankheiten des HirngeMsystems. Für Gesamtdeutschland rechnet man jährlich etwa mit einer halben Million Neuerkrankungen und etwa 130 000 Todesfällen (Bundesministerium für Gesundheit, 1991). Etwa 40% der Überlebenden behalten Restschäden, und nur jeder zehnte kann ohne Folgeschäden seinen gewohnten Arbeitsplatz wieder einnehmen. Die zerebrovaskulären Erkrankungen sind somit von herausragender sozialmedizinischer und sozialpolitischer Bedeutung.
