Abstract
Even in low doses antacids are effective in the treatment of duodenal ulcer. In the treatment of acute duodenal ulcer they are equally effective as cimetidine, ranitidine or misoprostol. In long-term therapy, antacids have proved equally successful in low doses as prophylactics against a recurrence of duodenal ulcer, and were just as effective as H2-blockers. Since the doses of antacids required to accelerate the healing of a duodenal ulcer result in only minimal changes in gastric and duodenal pH, it must be assumed that the therapeutic effect of antacids is not only a function of acid neutralization.
