In der Geschichte der neueren experimentellen Schlafforschung, die mit der Entdeckung des aktiven Schlafes und der Trennung in die beiden Schlafarten REM-Schlaf (rapid eye movement sleep) und nonREM (NREM)-Schlaf beginnt (4), lassen sich zwei Phasen unterscheiden.
