Zusammenfassung

Das 1565 an der Ostküste Floridas von den Spaniern gegründete Fort St. Augustine gilt als die älteste Stadt auf angloamerikanischem Boden. Die vorkolumbische Bevölkerung hat in diesem Teil der westlichen Hemisphäre keine derarige Hochkultur hervorgebracht wie in Teilen des zentral- und südamerikanischen Raumes, die mit städtischen Siedlungen wie der Stadt Tenochtitlan, der später als Mexico City wiederaufgebauten Hauptstadt Mexikos, verbunden gewesen wären.
