„Konkurrenz belebt das Geschäft!“ Dies ist nicht nur ein Grundsatz unserer freien Marktwirtschaft; dieser Satz könnte auch das Motto einer allgemeinen Theorie der Musterbildung werden. Sobald es in einem System zum Wettstreit konkurrierender Kräften kommt, können daraus die vielfältigsten Muster erwachsen. In den Beiträgen dieses Buches haben wir bereits zahlreiche Beispiele kennengelernt. Alan Turing war Anfang der fünfziger Jahre einer der ersten Wissenschaftler, der das „Konkurrenzprinzip“ in ein mathematisches Modell verwandelte. Theoretische Gedankenspiele hatten ihn davon überzeugt, daß in chemischen Reaktionen aus dem Wechselspiel aktivierender und inhibierender Substanzen räumliche Muster entspringen können. In einem noch folgenden Kapitel werden chemische „Turingmuster“ und die Geschichte ihrer Entdeckung vorgestellt (vgl. Kap. 13). Bei der Entstehung von Turingmustern spielt neben der chemischen Reaktion ein physikalischer Prozeß, die Diffusion der Aktivator- und Inhibitorsubstanzen, eine ganz entscheidende Rolle.
