Zusammenfassung
Die Kunstsoziologie im allgemeinen und das soziologische Verständnis von Malerei und Maler im besonderen befinden sich noch in ihrem Anfangsstadium. Wie bei vielen sogenannten „Bindestrich-Soziologien“ finden sich die theoretischhen Abhandlungen gegenüber empirischen Studien weit in der Überzahl. Viele theoretische Betrachtungen über Malerei und den Maler treten in Werken des späten neunzehnten Jahrhunderts und der Zeit vor dem ersten Weltkrieg auf. Dann entstand eine Lücke, bis es zum ersten Band der Arbeiten von Pitirim A. Sorokin15, der Schrift von John Dewey16, dem Werk von Karl Mannheim17 und der Untersuchung von R. Mukerjee18 über die sozialen Funktionen der Kunst kam. Der Ursprung dieser Arbeiten liegt in ganz verschiedenen Bereichen: Schriftsteller wie L. Tolstoj, Kunstkritiker wie F. W. Ruckstull, Asthetiker wie Ch. Lalo und eine Reihe von Soziologen und Sozialhistorikern von E. A. Ross und Ch. H. Cooley bis T. Parsons, von G. Simmel und P. J. Proudhon bis G. Gurvitch haben sich mit diesem Problem befaßt.
