Abstract
Quality control is as old as human history, and even primitive tests of objects according to external characteristics provided variations in materials of similar type. At a later stage of development, tests and inspections were made not only on finished objects, but also on raw materials before manufacture. Direct testing of the object of the workpiece or structural component is still customary today, although since industrialisation, and in particular since mass production of steel began, it is becoming more frequent for inspection to be made on the material itself. Again, latest developments are concerned with the function of structural components in practical operation and, following the invention of suitable processes, with the inspection of manufactured objects. The scope covered by quality control has expanded greatly since World War I, particularly after the introduction of standards and with the increasing interest shown in government and municipal quarters. Rate of growth corresponds in every respect to the growth rates in production in the various industries. Private and public institutions carry out quality controls, and the high cost of control apparatus together with a desire for neutral inspection has resulted in a greater utilisation of stateowned facilities. Control processes determine whether the characteristic values of materials are ascertained before their application, whether the property of the materials in the manufactured structural component is tested without its destruction, and whether the material performance of the objects is inspected with regard to the material.
