Zusammenfassung

Fast überall in der Welt traten und treten in weniger entwickelten Ländern kollektive soziale Bewegungen auf, die ihre Unruhe, Fremdenhaß und vage artikulierten Ziele zum Ausdruck bringen. Viele dieser Bewegungen stehen in enger Verbindung mit den spezifischen Erfordernissen oder Zielen der Modernisierung. Sie erfassen Völker, die nach Modernisierung streben, beleben aber gleichzeitig Bruchstücke aus einer legendären Vergangenheit oder suchen, vielleicht sogar ganz passiv, eine emotional zufriedenstellende Zukunft, die mehr oder weniger vernünftigerweise erreichbar oder aber auch recht unrealistisch sein kann. Viele Bewegungen haben keine Vorstellungen, die über nationale oder ethnische Autonomie hinausgehen; andere versuchen weltliche Reformen mit Hilfe von durch geheiligte Traditionen und übernatürliche Sanktionen legitimierten Methoden und Führern, während wiederum andere einer utopischen Traumwelt nachjagen.
