Zusammenfassung

The present book systematically discusses the results of the archaeological excavation and research projects carried out in the Rhineland since World War II. It describes the present state of research in the history and civilization of the Rhineland during the Roman period, with regard to military affairs, phases of settlement (’Siedlungsgeschichte’) as well as questions of economics and religion. Military history is discussed in three separate phases. The predominant problem within the occupation phase is the question when the military camps which had been established in the interior of Gaul during the second triumvirate and during the earlier part of Augustus’ reign, were advanced to the Rhine. Archaeological finds prove that this cannot have come about prior to the second decennium B. C. Of the legionary camps of the Lower Rhine army which played an important part in the offensive of Drusus against the Germanic tribes, Novaesium and Vetera were investigated archaeologically. Our book contains a description of the fortifications and buildings of the eight chronologically superimposed camps of Novaesium. At Bonn one of “Drusus’ forts”, numbering more than fifty, was in part discovered.

La présente étude traite dans un ordre systématique des résultats obtenus par les fouilles et les recherches archéologiques faites en Rhénanie depuis la fin de la deuxième guerre mondiale. Il s’agit d’une mise au point des recherches consacrées à l’histoire et à la civilisation rhénanes à l’époque romaine: histoire militaire, histoire d’habitat, histoire économique et histoire religieuse. L’histoire militaire y est présentée en trois périodes distinctes. La question primordiale qui se pose pour la période de l’occupation est de savoir à quel moment les camps militaires qui se trouvaient, à l’époque du second triumvirat et aux premiers temps du règne d’Auguste, dans l’intérieur de la Gaule ont été avancés jusque sur le Rhin. Les découvertes faites au cours de ces fouilles permettent d’affirmer que cette époque ne saurait être antérieure à la seconde décade avant J. C. Parmi les camps de légions de l’armée du Rhin inférieur qui jouèrent un certain rôle lors de l’offensive de Drusus contre les Germains, Novaesium et Vetera ont fait l’objet d’une étude archéologique. Nous décrivons les fortifications et les constructions intérieures des 8 camps successifs de Novaesium. L’un des nombreux « castella » de Drusus — ils y en avait au moins une cinquantaine — a été partiellement mis à jour à Bonn.
