Zusammenfassung
Aristoteles war der letzte große Kosmologe der Antike, Ptolemäus, der fast fünf Jahrhunderte nach Aristoteles lebte, war ihr letzter großer Astronom. Ihre Schriften beherrschten das astronomische und kosmologische Denken des Abendlandes bis nach dem Tode von Kopernikus im Jahre 1543. Kopernikus scheint ihr unmittelbarer Erbe zu sein, denn in den dreizehn Jahrhunderten zwischen Ptolemäus’ Tod und Kopernikus’ Geburt erfolgte keine größere und dauerhaftere Modifikation ihres Werkes. Weil Kopernikus dort begann, wo Ptolemäus aufgehört hatte, glauben viele Leute, daß es in den dazwischenliegenden Jahrhunderten keine Naturwissenschaften gegeben habe. Doch gab es sehr starke, wenn auch nicht kontinuierliche, wissenschaftliche Tätigkeit. Sie spielte eine wesentliche Rolle bei der Vorbereitung der kopernikanischen Wende.
