Zusammenfassung
Vulkaneruptionen gehören zu den eindrucksvollsten Naturphänomenen. Sie haben den Menschen in aktiven Vukangebieten seit grauer Vorzeit mit Angst und Schrecken erfüllt und ihn deshalb immer wieder nach den Ursachen, den Wurzeln dieser Naturgewalten fragen lassen. In vielen Ländern, vom pazifischen Kulturkreis bis zu den Kulturen der abendländischen Klassik, haben sich unzählige Naturmythen über Dämonen und Götter der Tiefe entwickelt [1, 2]. Noch den Fegefeuervorstellungen des christlichen Mittelalters liegt die orientalische Überlieferung eines reinigenden Feuerstroms in der Tiefe zugrunde [3]. In der griechischen Mythologie tritt überdies schon neben der lebenszerstörenden deutlich auch die lebenserhaltende Seite der Vulkangewalten zutage: mit dem Geschenk des Feuers, das er dem Hephaistos in der Tiefe gestohlen hatte, verhalf Prometheus dem Menschen zu seiner wahren Existenz [4]. Diese Ambivalenz charakterisiert bis heute — vielleicht stärker denn je — unser Erkenntnisinteresse am Phänomen des Vulkanismus.
