Abstract
The temperature sensitivity of cutaneous receptors has been studied extensively in mammals. Besides thermoreceptors which have a poor or lacking mechanical sensitivity, there exists another group of skin receptors, namely the slowly-adapting mechanoreceptors which respond to temperature changes. The slowly-adapting receptors have been divided into two types (for lit. see Burgess and Perl, 1973). Type I is highly sensitive to mechanical stimuli and has a characteristic irregular firing pattern during a long lasting stimulus. The discharge of the type II receptor shows a highly regular firing rate with very constant impulse intervals. Often a spontaneous activity can be observed in type II receptors.
