Zusammenfassung

Aktuelle Studien, publiziert durch den US Gesundheitsminister, zeigen einen alarmierenden Anstieg beim Tabakkonsum unter Teenagern aus Minderheitengruppen in den USA (USDHHS, 1998). Untersuchungen über die Raucherraten in vier verschiedenen ethnischen Gruppen: 1) AfroamerikanerInnen, 2) IndianerInnen und Alaskastämmige Personen; 3) AsiatInnen/PazifikinsulanerInnen sowie 4) Hispanische AmerikanerInnen — belegen, dass Zigarettengenuss unter allen vier Gruppen zugenommen hat und vor allem bei Afroamerikanern und Amerikanern spanischer Abstammung signifikant angestiegen ist. Besonders Besorgnis erregend ist der Anstieg der Raucherraten unter afroamerikanischen Jugendlichen, da die sinkenden Konsummuster in dieser Gruppe während der 70er und 80er Jahre als Erfolg von Public Health Maßnahmen verbucht worden waren. Von 1991 bis 1997 jedoch stiegen die Raucherraten unter afroamerikanischen Teenagern um 80% an. Afroamerikanische Männer haben eine um 50% erhöhte Sterberate an Lungenkrebs als Männer heller Hautfarbe, und jedes Jahr sterben etwa 45.000 Afroamerikaner an vermeidbaren Krankheiten, die allein durch das Rauchen verursacht werden.
