Abstract
In this chapter we describe a few typical applications of CT. The purpose is to give an idea of the scope and limitations of CT and to motivate the mathematical apparatus we are going to develop in the following chapters.
In Section I.1 we give a short description of CT in diagnostic radiology. This will serve as a standard example throughout the book. In Section I.2 we consider more examples and discuss very briefly some physical principles which lead to CT.
