Für eine reelle Funktion f : ℝ →ℝ mit der Definitionsmenge D(f) haben wir in Kapitel 4 das globale Maximum (bzw. globale Minimum) von f definiert. Ist x o die zugehörige Maximalstelle, so gilt f(xo) ≥ f(x) für alle x ∈ D(f). Von einem lokalen Maximum f(x1) für ein x1 ∈ D(f) spricht man, falls ein δ > 0 existiert, so daß f(x1) ≥ f(x) für alle x ∈ (x1— δ, x1+δ) ∩ D(f) . Das lokale Minimum ist analog definiert.
