Abstract
We consider the backreaction problem for a smooth background field depending on one coordinate. We give a reformulation so that the scattering data of the corresponding Schrödinger equation become the independent variables. Using knowledge from the inverse scattering method it is shown that the problem can be reduced to an algebraic one within an arbitrary good approximation. For the simplest case an explicit example is given.
