Abstract
Yellow lupin and chick pea were cultivated on two acid P-deficient soils (pH: 5.3; <2 mg lactate extractable P/100 g soil) in a pot experiment.
The application of 50 mg P/kg soil strongly increased dry matter production in both species. Lupines showed a higher P-concentration in the shoots than chick pea especially in the P-treatment (0.13 – 0.19% vs. 0.08 – 0.15% P).
This result was caused by a higher P-influx in yellow lupin compared to chick pea, which was, on average, a factor of 4 higher in the P-treatment. Root morphology parameters or differing root/shoot ratio did not explain the differences in P acquisition between both plant species. We explain this result by the excretion of mobilizing agents by yellow lupines. Like white lupin, this plant species forms proteoid roots as a result of P deficiency.
