Abstract

It was shown that the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus, Glomus mosseae, contributes to the acquisition of both inorganic and organic N by wheat. Hyphae of the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus were shown to transport 15N to the plants after supplying N in inorganic form (as 15NH4 15NO3, 15NO3 or ’5NH4) or organic form (as 15N-glycine) to hyphae over a 48 h period. The form of inorganic N influenced the growth of hyphae, and 15N acquisition and dry mass of the plants (NH4NO3 ≥ NO3 > NH4 +). Nitrogen status of the plants affected the root length colonised, hyphal growth, 15N uptake and dry mass of the plants (sufficient N > insufficient N).
