Funktionalismus — Geschichte und Zukunftsperspektiven einer Theorietradition

Soziologischer Funktionalismus

Zusammenfassung

Der Funktionalismus ist eine tief in der Geschichte der Soziologie verwurzelte Theorietradition, die in den 1950er Jahren insbesondere in den Werken von Talcott Parsons und Robert K. Merton einen Hohepunkt erreicht hat. Damals war die amerikanische Soziologie und von ihr ausgehend die Soziologie in der ganzen Welt maBgeblich durch den Funktionalismus gepragt. Das hat sich seit den 1960er Jahren mit dem Aufkommen einer Vielzahl von Gegenstromungen gegen den Funktionalismus grundlegend geandert. In den 1980er Jahren hat der Funktionalismus neue Beachtung in der Theoriediskussion gewonnen. Es ist ja nicht der Fall, dass die in der Opposition gegen den Funktionalismus entwickelten Theorieansätze jeweils fur sich und auch nicht im Verbund das theoretische Instrumentarium des Funktionalismus komplett ersetzen können. So wie sie als Reaktionen auf die Defizite des Funktionalismus entstanden sind und Anerkennung gefunden haben, so ist es durchaus angebracht, grundlegende Elemente des Funktionalismus zu revitalisieren, um die Defizite der gegen den Funktionalismus entwickelten Theorieansätze ausgleichen zu können. Dabei kommt es darauf an, das funktionalistische Denken selbstkritisch fortzuführen und durch die Inklusion wesentlicher Aspekte konkurrierender Theorieansätze in das Theoriegebaude zu erweitern und auf diese Weise zu erneuern.
