Zusammenfassung
Die Synthetische Evolutionstheorie, englisch Modern Synthesis oder kurz „Synthese “, ist das gegenwärtige Standardmodell der Evolution. Sie geht von kleinsten Variationen bei der Vererbung aus (Gradualismus), die durch genetische Mutationen bestimmt werden, und betrachtet gemäß Darwin und Wallace die natürliche Selektion als den Hauptmechanismus der Evolution. Die an ihre Umwelt Bestangepassten einer Art überleben statistisch öfter, und sie haben dadurch eine höhere Anzahl fortpflanzungsfähiger Nachkommen. Die Synthese wird bis 1980 weiter ergänzt, aber in ihren Grundannahmen fast nicht verändert. Kritik erfolgt vor allem an Vorstellungen zu strenger Anpassung (Adaptionismus). Der Hauptmechanismus der Synthese, die natürliche Selektion, wird nicht infrage gestellt.
