Zusammenfassung
Der Meereisrückzug löst möglicherweise einen potenziell katastrophalen Rückkopplungseffekt aus. Der submarine Permafrost beginnt zu tauen und da dieser auch Methanhydrate enthält, werden große Mengen Methan freigesetzt. Seit Jahren wurden immer wieder Methanfahnen aus aufsteigenden Gasblasen beobachtet, es sind jedoch noch enorme Mengen Methanhydrate vorhanden. Eine pulsartige Freisetzung großer Mengen dieses potenten Treibhausgases würde die Klimaerwärmung enorm beschleunigen. Auch der Permafrost an Land taut immer weiter auf, wobei Mikroorganismen damit beginnen, die im Boden erhaltene organische Substanz zu Methan und Kohlendioxid abzubauen. Diese Freisetzung ist langsamer, hätte aber potenziell noch größere Folgen.
