Abstract
Areal surface topography measuring instruments are increasingly used in academics and industry. In order to ensure their traceability and to estimate their measurement uncertainty, a reliable calibration via areal material measures is required. Different manufacturing processes for areal material measures have been investigated. One method is ball end micro milling, which is a very well suited process for machining free-form surfaces in metallic materials. Various parameters were examined in previous parameter studies by the authors that influence the quality of the surface and the dimensional accuracy of the manufactured geometries. The studies were subdivided into parameters that define the control dataset (CNC code dataset) and the cutting parameters. Strong correlations between the tested parameters and the resulting surface quality were found. This study investigates whether the parameters that have led to good surface quality in individual studies can be combined according to the superposition principle, aiming to identify an optimum parameter set for the respective tool-workpiece combination. The reproducibility of the surface quality and the stochastic influences that occur during manufacturing are further investigated.
