Versagt die konventionelle Atemunterstützung, können extrakorporale Lungenersatzverfahren eingesetzt und gleichzeitig eine „lungenschonende“ Beatmung unter Vermeidung hoher Atemwegsspitzendrücke, hoher Atemhubvolumina und hoher inspiratorischer O2-Konzentrationen durchgeführt werden („Ruhigstellung der Lunge“).
