Zusammenfassung
Der Begriff Vigilanz wurde von Henry Head erstmals 1923 in der neurowissenschaftlichen Diskussion verwendet im Zusammenhang mit der Fähigkeit eines Organismus, adäquat auf Umweltreize zu reagieren. Seither wurde Vigilanz auf verschiedene Weisen interpretiert und neuformuliert: Die Palette reicht von der Gleichsetzung von Vigilanz mit Wachheit bis hin zur Auffassung, Vigilanz sei eine besondere Form der Aufmerksamkeit (Daueraufmerksamkeit).
Im Zusammenhang mit Schlafen und Wachen, sowie Prozessen der Ermüdung wird, mit Rückgriff auf das ursprüngliche Konzept von Head, die Fähigkeit eines Organismus Ressourcen zu mobilisieren, als Vigilanzleistung aufgefasst. Dadurch ist selbst in Situationen von Ressourcenknappheit (z. B. infolge von Schläfrigkeit) ein adäquates Reagieren, zumindest eine Zeitlang, noch möglichen.
