Zusammenfassung
Neue technische bildgebende Verfahren, allen voran die funktionelle Magnetresonanztomographie (fMRT), haben gezeigt, dass bei mehreren Menschen im Wachkoma, bei denen in der klinischen Untersuchung kein Hinweis auf bewusste Wahrnehmung der eigenen Person wie der Umwelt zu finden war, bewusste Wahrnehmung nachweisbar ist, da auf äußere Reize und verbale Aufträge dieselben Areale aktiv sind wie bei gesunden Probanden. Damit ergibt sich – trotz vieler untersuchungstechnischer Schwierigkeiten – die Möglichkeit, bewusste Wahrnehmung zu dokumentieren, auch wenn das klinisch nicht möglich ist. Diese Methoden eröffnen auch die ferne Möglichkeit, eine zumindest Ja/Nein-Kommunikation aufzubauen. Problematisch ist aber die Tatsache, dass auch negative Ergebnisse aus vielen Gründen eine bewusste Wahrnehmung nicht ausschließen. Zweifelsohne haben die neuen Untersuchungstechniken die Einstellung zum Thema Wachkoma verändert.
