Zusammenfassung
Würden alle Kräfte im Universum auf Materie und Antimaterie symmetrisch einwirken, wären beim Urknall gleiche Mengen Materie und Antimaterie aus Licht entstanden. Antimaterie ist aber in unserem Universum nicht mehr vorhanden, weil sie durch Zusammenstöße mit Materie vernichtet wurde. Dass ein Rest von Materie übrigblieb, nämlich das ganze uns bekannte Universum, lässt sich nur durch eine Verletzung der Symmetrie zwischen Materie und Antimaterie erklären. Könnte eine der bekannten vier Naturkräfte diesen Effekt bewirkt haben? Die Gravitation, die elektromagnetische Kraft, die starke oder schwache Kernkraft? Oder ist dafür eine fünfte „superschwache Kraft“ nötig? Lange Zeit war dies umstritten. In einer Serie von Experimenten am CERN konnten wir eine solche zusätzliche Kraft ausschließen und zeigen, dass die schwache Kraft die Symmetrieverletzung verursacht.
