Zusammenfassung

Soziale Beziehungen können hilfreich sein, indem Menschen einander unterstützen und zusammenhalten. Dieser Gedanke liegt dem Konzept des Sozialkapitals zugrunde. Das Sozialkapitalkonzept ist ein übergeordnetes Konzept zur Bedeutung von sozialen Beziehungen. Gemessen wird Sozialkapital zumeist über Ausmaß und Vielfalt des sozialen Netzwerks, Vertrauen in andere und Erwartung von Hilfsbereitschaft. In der gesundheitswissenschaftlichen Forschung dominiert die Betrachtung des Sozialkapitals größerer Gebietseinheiten wie Nachbarschaften und Regionen. Existierende Studien weisen mehrheitlich darauf hin, dass die Bewohnerschaft von Gemeinden mit hohem Sozialkapital gesünder ist und Individuen mit hohem Sozialkapital eine bessere Gesundheit aufweisen. Den Bereichen des Sozial- und Gesundheitswesens bietet das Sozialkapitalkonzept vielfältige Analyse- und Handlungsmöglichkeiten, die bis dato nicht ausgeschöpft und im Hinblick auf individuelles Sozialkapital und dessen gesundheitsbezogene Wirkung gewinnbringend sind.
