Zusammenfassung
Aufgrund seiner mechanischen Eigenschaften wird Holz von alters her für ein sehr breites Spektrum von Zweckbestimmungen genutzt. Dabei reicht die Verwendung von statischen Zwecken im Bauwesen und Inneneinrichtungen unter weitgehendem Erhalt der tragenden Strukturen bis hin zur energetischen Nutzung – also dem kompletten Abbau zu Wasser, Mineralien und Kohlendioxid. Zwischen diesen Extremen gibt es vielfältige Zwischenstufen physikalischer und/oder chemischer Behandlung.
In den Abschnitten 2 bis 5 bleiben alle statisch bedeutsamen Strukturen erhalten und werden zur Optimierung der mechanischen Eigenschaften mit anderen Materialien wie Glasfasern oder sogar Beton kombiniert. Die chemische Bearbeitung beschränkt sich dabei auf das Verkleben von Holzkomponenten untereinander oder auch mit anderen Werkstoffen. Durch diese vielfältigen Kombinationen lassen sich neue mechanische Eigenschaften erzielen. Wenn die hierarchische Struktur, die zu einer anisotropen Verteilung der mechanischen Eigenschaften führt, aufgelöst wird, lässt sich auch eine nahezu isotrope Verteilung des Eigenschaftsprofils hinsichtlich Mechanik in Verbundwerkstoffen erreichen.
Setzt man eher auf die chemischen Bestandteile und nicht auf die mechanische Struktur, so lässt sich Holz mit verschiedenen Verfahren aufschließen und fraktionieren. Neun dieser Prozesse sind beschrieben und nach ihrer jeweiligen technischen Reife beurteilt. Dazu ist festzustellen, dass unterschiedliche Entwicklungsstände vorliegen: vom bestehenden Bedarf an Grundlagenforschung bis hin zur bereits erreichten industriellen Anwendung. Zu unterscheiden sind diese Verfahren, die die chemischen Strukturen erhalten – hier sind Lignin, Hemicellulose und Cellulose als grundlegende erhaltenswerte Strukturen angesprochen – von solchen, die diese Strukturen abbauen. Während es für Cellulose und Hemicellulose bereits viele ausgereifte Anwendungen gibt, besteht für Lignin – von wenigen Anwendungen abgesehen – noch ein ausgeprägter Forschungsbedarf, um die Syntheseleistung der Natur optimal nutzen zu können. Verwendet man Verfahren, die die genannten Zielstrukturen weiter abbauen, so gelangt man am Ende zu kleinen Molekülen, die etwa als Treibstoff (Bioethanol) oder als Methan energiespeichernd ins Gasnetz eingetragen werden oder in weiteren Prozessen der chemischen Industrie als Rohstoff dienen können. Ein wesentliches Kriterium aller genannten Verfahren ist, dass keine Reststoffe übrigbleiben, sondern sogar Reststoffe aus anderen Prozessen mit in den Kreislauf aufgenommen werden können. Für die chemische Industrie ist es interessant, auf den verschiedenen Stufen der Aufschlüsse Komponenten auszuschleusen, die wiederum für weitere Produktion verwendbar sind und fossile Rohstoffe ersetzen können. Sollte eine weitere Verwendung nach verschiedenen Produktzyklen nicht mehr sinnvoll sein, so ist eine thermische Nutzung immer noch möglich und das entstehende Kohlendioxid kann unter Einsatz von Katalysatoren und Energie wieder in den Wertstoffkreislauf aufgenommen werden.
