Selen, genauer: die selenhaltige Aminosäure Selenocystein, ist in der Evolution offensichtlich zu spät gekommen. Und wurde für ihre Verspätung tatsächlich bestraft. Obwohl unverzichtbarer Baustein vieler Proteine, bekam Selenocystein keinen Platz im genetischen Code.
