Eine Kalorie ist diejenige Menge an Wärmeenergie, die notwendig ist, um die Temperatur von einem Gramm reinen Wassers von \(14{,}5\,^{\circ}\mathrm{C}\) auf \(15{,}5\,^{\circ}\mathrm{C}\) zu erhöhen. Die SI-Einheit für die Energie ist Joule. \(1\,\mathrm{J}=0{,}239\,\mathrm{cal}\) und \(1\,\mathrm{cal}=4{,}184\,\mathrm{J}\). Daher sind \(486\,\mathrm{cal}=2033\,\mathrm{J}\) oder \(2{,}033\,\mathrm{kJ}\) (Kilojoule). Obwohl hier als Wärmeenergie definiert, sind die Kalorie bzw. das Joule die Einheit für die mechanische, elektrische oder chemische Energie. Beim Bewerten von Energieangaben sollten Sie stets Joule mit Joule und Kalorie mit Kalorie vergleichen.
