Zusammenfassung
Der Beitrag zeigt auf, dass chronische Überinvestition im europäischen Klubfußball das natürliche Ergebnis der zunehmenden Kommerzialisierung und des mehrstufigen Wettbewerbsformats ist, in dem Profitabilität für die Mehrheit der Klubs weder ein Ziel noch ein Überlebenskriterium darstellt. Solange das bestehende Wettbewerbsformat nicht grundlegend angepasst wird – und nichts deutet darauf hin – sind Maßnahmen, wie das von der Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) eingeführte finanzielle Fairplay zur Durchsetzung härterer Budgetgrenzen das wirksamste Mittel für finanzielle Stabilität. Vor der Einführung des finanziellen Fair Play konnten öffentliche oder private Kapitalgeber defizitäre Klubs zum Zweck des Lizenzerhalts retten, sodass Budgetüberschreitungen ohne Konsequenz blieben. Die Vorschriften begrenzen effektiv die Anreize und die Möglichkeiten bedenkenloser Spielerausgaben, indem die Klubs ihre Ausgaben für Spieler aus eigener Kraft decken müssen. Investitionen, die den nachhaltigen Erfolg eines Klubs fördern, etwa in Stadien, Trainingseinrichtungen und Juniorenförderung, sind nach wie vor möglich und erwünscht. Die Autoren diskutieren auch die Effekte des finanziellen Fair Play auf die leistungsmäßige Ausgeglichenheit zwischen den Klubs sowie die Möglichkeiten der Klubs, die Regularien zu umgehen.
