Abstract
Bio-inspired design is a transdisciplinary approach; it links biology and technology, generating knowledge beyond the disciplinary borders. Helms et al. (2009) defined biologically inspired design as the approach to using “analogies to biological systems to develop solutions for engineering problems.” In this book, we understand bio-inspired design in a slightly broader sense: Bio-inspired design is the application of knowledge of biological systems in research and development for technical inventions and innovations.
