Zusammenfassung
Das aktive Medium der konventionellen Festkörperlaser besteht aus Kristallen oder Gläsern mit Abmessungen von einigen cm, welche mit optisch aktiven Ionen dotiert sind. Es handelt sich dabei meist um Ionen der Übergangsmetalle wie z. B. Cr3+ oder der seltenen Erden wie z. B. Nd3+ oder Ho3+. Die Laserübergänge finden zwischen Energieniveaus der inneren ungefüllten Elektronenschalen statt. Diese werden vom Kristallfeld des Wirtskristalls nicht stark beeinflusst. Die Übergänge sind daher ziemlich scharf und strahlungslose Zerfallsprozesse haben keine große Bedeutung. Diese Eigenschaften wirken sich positiv auf die Kleinsignalverstärkung γ (vgl. Gl. 4.15) und demzufolge auf die Pumpschwelle aus. Die Dotierung mit Fremdionen beträgt oft weniger als ein Gewichtsprozent. Trotzdem ist aber die Dichte der laseraktiven Ionen von der Größenordnung von 1019 cm−3, d. h. wesentlich höher als beispielsweise die Dichte in einem Gaslaser, wo sie 1015 bis 1017 cm−3 beträgt. Trotz des relativ kleinen Wirkungsgrades von typisch 0,1 % lassen sich daher mit Festkörperlasern hohe Leistungen erzielen. Die Anregung geschieht durch optisches Pumpen mit Blitzlampen oder mit Diodenlasern. Der erste Laser der Geschichte war ein Festkörperlaser, nämlich ein Rubinlaser, der im Abschn. 16.1 besprochen wird. Der wohl wichtigste Festkörperlaser ist aber heute der Neodymlaser (Abschn. 16.2). Weitere Festkörperlaser werden im Abschn. 16.3 diskutiert, während der Abschn. 16.4 abstimmbaren Festkörperlasern gewidmet ist. Im Abschn. 16.5 wird eine besondere Kategorie von abstimmbaren Festkörperlasern, die der Farbzentrenlaser, vorgestellt. Das Kapitel schließt mit einer Besprechung von neueren Festkörperlaserentwicklungen ab, die in den letzten Jahren stark an Bedeutung gewonnen haben: Faserlaser (Abschn. 16.6), Frequenzkämme (Abschn. 16.7) sowie Weißlichtlaser und Superkontinuum (Abschn. 16.8)
