Zusammenfassung

Elliot Proctor Joslin (1869–1962) war der Überzeugung, dass mit der Entdeckung des Insulins der Diabetes mellitus seinen Schrecken verloren habe und formulierte sinngemäß in den 1920er-Jahren „today it is not allowed to die of diabetic coma“. Dass sich diese Hoffnung nicht erfüllte, kann man in den ISPAD-Guidelines nachlesen: Die Mortalitätsrate bei einer diabetischen Ketoazidose scheint zwar insgesamt rückläufig zu sein, beim Vorliegen eines Hirnödems liegt sie jedoch nach wie vor bei 21–24 %. Ohne Zweifel ist die diabetische Ketoazidose nach wie vor ein zentrales Problem bei der Behandlung von Kindern und Jugendlichen mit Diabetes mellitus.
