Zusammenfassung
Als Ökosysteme der Hochlagen gelten Lebensräume ab ca. 1500 m Meereshöhe. Sie kommen in Mitteleuropa nur in den Alpen und in den höchsten Bereichen einiger Mittelgebirge vor und sind durch traditionelle Landnutzung erweitert und differenziert worden. Der Reichtum an Arten und Vegetationstypen ist zum Teil wesentlich höher als in den tieferen Lagen. Allerdings gibt es auch im Gebirge negative Einwirkungen auf die Umwelt, etwa durch Skipisten, Lawinenverbauung, Straßenbau, Rückgang der traditionellen Landwirtschaft und den Klimawandel. Wegen der besonderen klimatischen Verhältnisse und der begrenzten Ausbreitung der Pflanzen entwickeln sich die Vegetation und die Böden der Hochlagen nur langsam. Mittlerweile gibt es aber praxistaugliche Methoden der Stabilisierung erosionsgefährdeter Hänge und der Wiederanlage von Hochlagengrünland mit standörtlich passenden Arten und Ökotypen.
