Zusammenfassung
Über kurz oder lang wird der Klimawandel die Inseln der Republik Kiribati unbewohnbar machen und letztendlich wird das Meer sie verschlucken. Aber ob das noch dieses Jahrhundert oder erst im nächsten passiert, hängt von der Höhe des Meeresspiegelanstiegs und den Anpassungsmaßnahmen ab, die jetzt durchgeführt werden. Reaktionen auf die schwerer werdenden Lebensbedingungen, die heute diskutiert werden, reichen von Migration der gesamten Bevölkerung über die Erhöhung einzelner Inseln bis zum Bau künstlicher, schwimmender Inseln. Für alle diese Maßnahmen braucht Kiribati aber die finanzielle, technische und operative Hilfe der Verursacher des Klimawandels, der luftverschmutzenden Staaten vor allem des globalen Nordens.
