Abstract

When using POCT, basic hygiene (infection control) measures to protect patients and staff must be specified in the hygiene plan. Annually, the staff must receive documented training in the updated versions. The spread of pathogens during sample transport to and from the POCT has to be prevented. All team members should be protected from infections and unwanted colonization by applying strict guidelines. POCT has been used increasingly for the patient-related and near-patient diagnosis of infection risks. This chapter discusses, among others, PCR-based, risk-adapted MRSA screening, instant electronic transmission of microbiological results to the infection control team, field studies to identify infection sources and the review of reprocessing procedures.
