The relevance of POCT in healthcare

  • Chapter
Point-of-Care Testing

Abstract

Near-patient laboratory diagnostics has a long history and is now an indispensable part of clinical medicine. On the one hand, devices incorporating POCT fulfill the medical rationale of shortening the time from blood draw to treatment decision. On the other, POCT analyzers can also be provided for organizational reasons, rendering feasible options like the ability to improve clinical processes or enhance patient satisfaction. Considering the numerous tests that are freely available, strict quality assurance is required and mandatory for most methods.
