Zusammenfassung
An eine Unterbrechung der Nahrungszufuhr passt sich der Organismus durch eine Reihe von physiologischen Umstellungen sowie Stoffwechsel- und Verhaltensänderungen an. Diese Anpassungsmechanismen sorgen für die Aufrechterhaltung der Vitalfunktionen durch Mobilisation gespeicherter Reserven an Makro- und Mikronährstoffen. So ist zum einen die Energieproduktion gesichert, sodass der Zellstoffwechsel jederzeit ausreichend mit Adenosintriphosphat versorgt wird, zum anderen ist die Zellregeneration gewährleistet. Die Erfahrungen religiöser und medizinischer Traditionen sowie auch zahlreiche Studien belegen die präventiven und therapeutischen Wirkungen des Fastens.
