Zusammenfassung
The importance of asepsis and antisepsis in surgery was first recognized by Ingac Semmelweiss in 1847. Since then, several effective infection prevention methods have been introduced, but surgical site infection (SSI) still remains one of the most important reasons for failure in orthopaedics and trauma; up to 2.5% of primary hip and knee replacements and up to 20% of joint revision procedures may in fact be complicated by periprosthetic joint infection (PJI ; Lentino 2003; Dale et al. 2009; Aggarwal 2014a).
