Zusammenfassung
Im Diskurs über die Wahrnehmung gesellschaftlicher Verantwortung durch Unternehmen herrscht Einigkeit darüber, dass dieses ein anspruchsvolles Unterfangen ist. Dies resultiert insbesondere daraus, dass komplexe Nachhaltigkeitskonzepte an die jeweiligen Unternehmenskontexte angepasst werden müssen (Hardtke et al. 2014, S. 6) und Unternehmen den Anforderungen ihrer Shareholder Rechnung tragen müssen. Ökonomisch auf dem Markt zu bestehen und gleichzeitig ökologisch und sozial nachhaltig zu agieren, können somit konkurrierende Ziele sein. Insbesondere sind kleine und mittlere Unternehmen (KMU) infolge ihrer Ressourcenknappheit darauf angewiesen, vorhandene Ressourcen besonders effektiv einzusetzen. KMU in Deutschland haben eine hohe volkswirtschaftliche Bedeutung: sie umfassen 99,6 % aller Unternehmen, erwirtschaften mehr als jeden zweiten Euro (56 % des Bruttoinlandsprodukts) und stellen deutlich über die Hälfte aller Arbeitsplätze (59,4 % Arbeitsplätze; BMWI 2014, S. 2).
